WR #2

I finished my second sketchbook ever this week! (green art creations) I’m feeling really proud of myself for continuing to work in my sketchbooks.

I started it back in 2023 by drawing an old picture of me and my PawPaw at the beach, and I decided to end it the same way. It was really fun to see how much my supply collection has grown, and how I approached the drawing differently. I think this might be a fun way to start and finish all of my sketchbooks… kinda like a benchmark workout. We’ll see if I stick with it. 🤷‍♀️

Last week’s focus

I started diving into Emma Carlisle’s sketchbook challenges… there’s lots of resources here that will be helpful for me going forward! And I focused on being consistent with my art while I was traveling to visit grandparents. That’s always a challenge, because I feel really self-conscious working on things around other people.

Helpful inputs/ resources from the week

  • Sketchbook challenges on Emma Carlisle’s Patreon - this week I watched the ones on tone and visual tangents… I have so much to learn!! It’s exciting!

STUDIO TIME LOG

Monday | 01-22-2024

  • Emma Carlisle “Before and After Tonal Challenge”

    • Helped me think about colors/ tones I’m lacking in my supplies, and how to capture something without using the technically “right color” - how to choose a different color that’s still the same tone

  • Sketched the photo of me and my PawPaw that I started my sketchbook with :)

Tuesday | 01-23-2024

  • Emma Carlisle “Visual Tangents” Sketchbook Challenge video

Wednesday | 01-24-2024

  • Emma Carlisle “Composition” Sketchbook Challenge Video

Thursday | 01-25-2024

  • Super quick oil pastel sketch before leaving for Alabama… it’s was hideous and I felt all cringey about it haha

Friday | 01-26-2024

  • Sketched Meemaw’s barn (in middle of green sketchbook… I was filling in blank pages)

Saturday | 01-27-2024

  • Sketched Meemaw’s neighbor’s house and her lake

    • I felt horrible about these sketches, but I was proud of myself for getting up to do them on a rainy morning

Sunday | 01-28-2024

  • Another go at drawing Meemaw’s lake

    • Felt like I was able to layer my materials and capture the feel of Meemaw’s lake much better on the second go round!

    • Definitely want to continue this “Sandi Hester style” of drawing/ painting the same scene different ways over and over again

SKETCHBOOK REVIEW

January 28, 2024

What question did I ask my sketchbook with this spread?

How can I layer my materials to capture the scene I love so much at Meemaw’s house?

How do I feel about it overall?

I was so embarrassed by my first attempt at drawing the lake… you can’t even tell it’s a lake! But I was proud of myself for trying it again.

What am I curious about?

I wonder what it’d be like to paint this with Flashe paints in my giant sketchbook?

What do I want to carry forward?

Consistency! Just keep drawing! It’s ok if I don’t like what I make.

FINAL WRAP UP

What has God taught me this week about glorifying Him through my art?

Just show up to practice and let God take care of the rest.

What am I excited about/ what’s my plan for next week? Any changes to initial 2024 planning?

Libby is in town visiting us, and we’re going to do an Emily Powell workshop together. Very exciting, but I’m also a little nervous. This is a good opportunity to get over my self-worship and enjoy creativity in community.
