WR #3
This week felt monumental! Nick and I had a friend visiting who is a super talented artist and designer. While she was here, we did two online Emily Powell workshops together. It was really out of my comfort zone, and before we even started I felt intimidated and insecure about my work. But once I got over myself, it was so much fun to do art with a kind, encouraging friend! I love how Libby worked big and filled her pages, and it challenged me to push myself to work bigger in the future. In fact, I went to the art supply store and bought a sketchbook a size up from what I’m used to working in. Yay for progress and learning from others!
Last week’s focus
Doing art with friends.
Helpful inputs/ resources from the week
Emily Powell workshops - Roomscapes, Apples on a Plate, and Sketchbook Special
Not getting on Instagram has been GREAT! I’ve been using time that I would have been scrolling IG to watch Emma Carlisle Process and Development and Before/ After videos. It’s really helpful to see how she’s working and thinking about her materials and process.

SKETCHBOOK REVIEW
January 29, 2024
Roomscapes with Libby
What question did I ask my sketchbook with this spread?
Well, if we’re being technical about it, this wasn’t in my sketchbook. 🙃 But the main “question” I asked was how I can build confidence doing art with others… spoiler alert! The answer is PRACTICE.
How do I feel about it overall?
I was really proud that I got lost in my work and didn’t make negative comparisons about about what I was able to do vs. what Libby did. I was able to appreciate things that were different about each of our pieces, instead of feeling any weird competitive-ness and insecurity about my own abilities. God made us all to see and appreciate his creation differently. And I’m loving art more and more because it’s a tangible reminder that we all reflect Him differently!
What am I curious about?
I wonder what it’d be like to do this same workshop but using my larger sketchbook/ only full sheets of paper?
What do I want to carry forward?
Enjoying the creative process with others.
FINAL WRAP UP
What has God taught me this week about glorifying Him through my art?
God made us for community. And even though it can be scary to think about, it’s fun to do art with friends!
What am I excited about/ what’s my plan for next week? Any changes to initial 2024 planning?
I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to balance more academic style learning with workshops. I’m enjoying Emily Powell’s workshops so much, and she’s selling another bundle in February. So I might decide to buy that bundle and postpone my Peggi Kroll Roberts classes. It’s hard to decide between technical and fun/ loose learning… and it’s hard to balance my spending on classes vs. spending on supplies. I JUST WANT TO BUY IT ALL!! haha
Also, in her January ‘24 Before and After video, Emma Carlisle talked about:
“I know what I’m doing. I don’t know where I’m going.”
It’s basically this idea of pushing through the work even when you don’t know exactly where you’re headed. And she talked about how you have to push through that to “find” anything. I think this is embodies where I’m at with my art practice. I know the skills I’m trying to develop. But I’m really not sure the end product I’m hoping to achieve. And that’s ok! I have to remind myself to kick back, enjoy getting my reps in, and just see where the ride takes me.
